How it Works with GEM-CAR
- Plug the USB receiver into your Windows PC where GEM-CAR is installed.
- The reader connects automatically (plug-and-play).
- Open GEM-CAR and scan a barcode (product, job code, VIN).
- The software captures the data directly from the reader.
- GEM-CAR recognizes wireless scanners as standard keyboard input.
Other Compatible Alternatives (USB/Bluetooth)
Although the GEM-2D is the official option, other “universal” wireless scanners will also work with GEM-CAR, provided they are recognized as a keyboard or HID device by Windows:
Wireless 2D Readers to Consider
The following models are solid options if you want to explore other brands (usually work in HID mode via Bluetooth or USB key):
- Universal Bluetooth 2D readers (scan QR + 1D codes) – Windows compatible
- 2.4 GHz wireless USB readers with receiver (similar to GEM-2D)
- Scanners with charging base + stand for workshop
Check that the Reader Supports:
- 1D + 2D (Code 39, Code 128, EAN, QR, DataMatrix, etc.)
- HID keyboard mode so that GEM-CAR can read it directly. Examples of compatible styles: portable Bluetooth 2D readers or 2.4 GHz wireless USB scanners (often sold on BestBuy and professional websites).
Purchasing Advice:
- 1D only? OK for certain product uses, but less flexible.
- 2D/QR required? Yes, if you want to scan QR codes or certain advanced VIN formats.
- Bluetooth vs. wireless USB? Bluetooth: good for tablets or mobile devices.
- Wireless USB (dongle): often more stable with Windows PCs (standard GEM-CAR use).
