Note: Tips are not taxable.
You can claim half the taxes on meals and entertainment expenses. GEM-CAR already includes this functionality within the chart of accounts.
That is, if you enter a meals and entertainment transaction, it will automatically split the taxes in half on the transaction. The taxable percentage tells GEM-CAR to divide the taxes at 50% to help you build your transaction. It will not split the taxes in half when posting the transaction to the general ledger. For example, if the GST on the invoice is $12.90, GEM-CAR will suggest $6.45.
In other words, if you manually enter $12.90 in the transaction, GEM-CAR will post that same amount to the general ledger. Click on Accounting > Chart of Accounts > +Add
In the Information tab, enter the following details:
- Internal Code
- Name
- Financial
Check the following boxes:
- This account is used for payments/receipts
- This account is taxable
- Prompt to generate pre-authorized payments upon payment
Click on Save.
We also suggest having a non-taxable expense account for tips.
Let’s take the example of a restaurant bill along with the credit card receipt. After entering the date and invoice number, select a generic supplier and press on Invoice (C+). Enter everything that was charged to the credit card on the debit side.
This will generate a final transaction like the following:
