Understand the Changes to the "Heavy Vehicle" Status

Changes to the definition of “heavy vehicle” in the law concerning owners, operators and drivers of heavy vehicles came into force on January 1, 2011.

From now on, any road vehicle or combination of road vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 4,500 kg or more is considered a heavy vehicle.

The GVWR indicates the weight of a vehicle, including its maximum load capacity, according to the manufacturer's specifications.

GVWR = net weight + maximum load capacity.
